The Xpeng P7, a new electric vehicle from the Chinese manufacturer Xpeng, is drawing attention for its advancements in autonomous driving technology. In a recent video shared by the brand, the Xpeng P7 is shown operating in fully autonomous mode within the factory grounds where it is produced, offering a tangible look at near-future capabilities for electric vehicles.
Autonomous Driving Demonstration
The showcased video reveals the P7 utilizing Level 3 autonomous driving, allowing the car to operate without any human intervention over a short, controlled distance inside the factory. Level 3 autonomy means drivers can divert their attention from the road while the system is active, a step above most commercially available driver-assist systems.
The core of this autonomous function is a network of integrated cameras that gather environmental data and feed it to three specialized processors developed by Xpeng. Each chip is capable of 750 trillion operations per second (TOPS), giving the P7 a combined processing power of 2,250 TOPS—three times the computational capability found in Tesla’s Model Y. This substantial processing force is critical for real-time decision-making and environmental awareness, supporting precise, safe navigation without human oversight.
Additionally, the P7 supports advanced AI language models—Vision Language Action and Vision Language Models—which allow the car to interpret and respond to complex driving scenarios. This integration hints at a future where cars can interact dynamically with their environment and drivers using natural language interfaces.
