Google has reportedly selected a dessert-themed codename for its upcoming Android 17 operating system, continuing a long-standing tradition of assigning confectionery names to its Android versions, according to informant Mishaal Rahman. The chosen name for Android 17 is “Cinnamon Bun”.
While Google officially stopped using dessert names publicly after Android 9 (“Pie”), the company has maintained this naming convention internally for subsequent versions. For instance, Android 16 is internally referred to as “Baklava,” Android 14 as “Upside Down Cake,” and Android 10 as “Quince Tart.” This practice adheres to an alphabetical order, with Android 17’s codename starting with the letter “C,” following Android 16’s “B.”
The “Cinnamon Bun” moniker is expected to appear in experimental builds of Android 17, specifically at API level 37.0, but will likely be phased out once stable versions are released to the public, consistent with Google’s approach to internal codenames. While details about Android 17’s features remain limited, as current attention is focused on Android 16, some anticipated improvements include enhanced display optimizations for larger-screen devices like tablets and foldables.
